Hey everyone! Welcome to Wednesday’s surf report from Colorados. Surfline regained my trust by accurately forecasting the power of the swell we received today and yesterday. You can even see the swell line featuring at the outer chunk of rock outside of the lineup.
Today’s report will mostly feature riderless beasts as there were few people out this morning when I went to shoot.
It’s interesting for me to see the extreme difference between the surf at high tide and low tide today. At high tide when I took photos like the one shown here it would’ve paid to take off under the lip and fairly deep. However at low tide, even the waves that looked like they would corner off ended up racing.
It always looks easy from the beach, but the challenge of getting a clean paddle line into one of these in the water is nothing to scoff at.
One of the only challengers to find some tube time this morning.
I wish I could’ve teleported out there for this set. I need to super power to stop time for 6 minutes haha.
Another advantage of high tide Colorados is that you can sometimes afford to get the latter waves in a set, as the whitewater from the earlier set waves doesn’t drain back out toward you as fast as it does at low tide.
The insider medium-sized waves are the true gems when the swell interval jumps up big time. Or at least these are the easier waves that I usually try to target haha.
This young guy launched a decent air, so I figured I’d share a few frames from the maneuver. He compressed adequately and set himself up perfectly through this bottom turn.
Now it’s time to project off the lip and rotate his shoulders via his arms.
Grab rail, Fish Face! Haha, sorry that’s a bit of a mean joke. He does have the fish face going though.
It’s very important to know how to manage risk and fall in a secure manner when the waves are big. This guy has the correct technique in this frame. He knows he’s going down in a compromised position so he is in the process of lifting his forearms to protect his face. I execute this technique to protect my face religiously.
One last unicorn to close today’s report. Hopefully tomorrow it is a bit more consistent than today. It was big today, but a lot of paddling and waiting. If you got even just one good keeper today though, then it was worth it. See you tomorrow.
