Somewhere in Nicaragua
Today is the second day of the Playa Santana Surf Contest. It’s a good thing it didn’t start until 11:00am because there was a bitchin party on the beach last night. Gotta love those offshore winds – all-day-long. The beach was packed today with competitors and onlookers alike. We caught tons of action. Check it out.
We’ve still got solid swell from yesterday with some head high sets coming through. Here’s a cool shot from the beach.
For the international division, we had JJ ripping these waves to shreds.
…but in the end, Lance “Damien” Moss (The owner of the outer reef, 15 – 20 feet, with his bare hands, no jet ski) prevailed with his “smooth as FDC on the rocks” style. Or maybe it’s more like a Tona…whatever, he won. Congrats Damien!
The chicks came out to support the groms in the Junior division.

But in the end, it was Rex dominating once again and taking home first prize – a new surfboard and some cash. Nice work Rexcito! Here’s a nice shot for your sponsors.
There was a lot of competition in this year’s National division. The level of surfing among these locals has really come a long way. Here’s Gerardo, staying high and tight, but unfortunately, not advancing.
Roque got Robbed! Roque got Robbed! OK, that’s all I’m going to say about that.
Kambute grabbed one of the best waves of the day. Unlucky timing for him, it was during a free surf after he got eliminated.
This is Agusto – Champion of the previous contest at Maderas. He placed 3rd in today’s event picking up enough points to qualify for the Transpacific Latin Championships next year in Guatamala. Congrats to you Agusto.

Local Limon surfer, Mario “Kalimba, Gallo Pinto, Marvin Foster” Martinez showed plenty of local knowledge by picking off some of the best waves of the contest. Like this one…
Same wave, on the inside for Mario. Mario represented the locals well placing second in the contest. Very nice Mario!
In the end, all eyes were on Luis Chamorro from San Juan Del Sur who, with a very strong showing, finished first place and thus maintained bragging rights for SJDS.
Just as smooth out of the water, Luis was especially gracious as he accepted his new surfboard, bag of goodies and some cash. It’s nice to have a positive roll model.
Actually, we came close to losing two of our champions in one of the international heats. This could have gone pretty bad had one of the people not been the owner of the outer reef, 15 – 20 feet, with his bare hands, without a jet ski.
Hey Luis – Congrats to you my friend! Today is your day – enjoy it.
These contests are a lot of work and this is how we all felt after two long days – Thanks to everybody involved – especially Baldo and Ricardo and the judges for putting in the hours and getting it done.

There isn`t much swell right now. Today was supposed to be the best day for the next week or so. It was about head high on sets and we had offhores all day. This is Gerardo picking off a nice right hander at Maderas.
