Somewhere in Nicaragua
Buenos! This is NSR’s daily surf report, I’m Eric bringing you more coverage of the Latino Americano contest at Playa Santana. The swell has picked up a bit for the final day of this competition. It was real hot today, the winds were onshore but not strong at all, the competitors were ripping today, and it was a great end for the contest.
The only Nicaraguan left, Rex “La Bestia” Calderon about to hit a steep and dumpy section. Rex was on fire for the start of the day but ended up getting beat in the semifinal heat. He took out a bunch of competitors who were all after that prize money and went on to finish third today.
Here’s an unknown competitor with a good frontiside turn, displacing a lot of water on fun looking right.
The girls final was super impressive. These girls were ripping and wereĀ up against some stiff competition from one another.
Check out this double up! This little man was pulling air reverses’ like it was nothingĀ and blasting his fins out the back on almost all his turns. He was just stuck to his board.
This guy was insane! Look at how inverted this turn is. He was also launching six foot airs all day. He didn’t place today but he’s got some serious potential for sure.
This wave started coming through once the tide got high. It was off to the side of the contest zone and for awhile there was nobody on it. I got to paddle out and surf this wave today and it was a sick setup. It’s real wedgy and jacks up quick. Lots of unridden waves were going through down there.
This wave brought up a lot of controversy. “La Bestia” getting dropped in on, but Martin Passeri wasn’t called for an interference. This was a man on man heat and they were using a priority rule. Rex had paddled for the previous wave, thus losing his priority.
Here is Martin again, he is from Peru, the land of lefts,Ā it’s no wonder heĀ rips soĀ hard on his frontside.Ā Martin surfs with a ton of power too. He finished runner up today and pocketed a sick prize!
This is the man of the day. Venezuela’s Rafeal “Nono” Pereira. This guy is an all around fantastic surfer. He can blast a 360 airĀ or he can lay down a turn with some serious power. This was the last wave of the final heat for him. He’d alreadyĀ won and was giving the crowd on the beach a show!
Right after that wave, Nono wasĀ stormed on the beach by all his friends and a pack of reporters. Flying the Venezuela flag!
Stoked to take second, Martin Passeri. Holding $1,300 in prize money!
Taking the title for Venezuela, and $2,300 in winnings, Rafeal..Time to celebrate!!!
