Somewhere in Nicaragua
Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to some of today’s late morning wave action at Playa Colorado. Unfortunately the wind came up earlier today than yesterday, but there was still one more fun window in the afternoon around 1:30pm.
The size wasn’t forecasted to be big today, but today was arguably one of the bigger days, if not the biggest, in the past 10 days.
After sticking an overhead takeoff, our shredder slammed the end section shut.
It’s hard to appreciate just how vertical, and sometimes even inverted, the takeoffs were today. Extended elevator drops like what we see here were par for the course today.
Although the wind was blowing cross-shore from the West, the sandbars are pretty good right now. The favorable bars in combination with low-tide = left barrels from the wind blowing into the wave face.
There were some frightening rip-current behemoths out there as well. Maybe paddling into one of these fellas is comparable to sprinting at a Mammoth with a spear?
Another one. Surprisingly if you committed to the drop and engaged your fins on the drops, these waves were more makable than they seem.
I met John (shown here) after he finished up his session. He had some big kahoonehs to stroke into this one from so deep. On the beach he told me it was fun, but one would definitely pay the price out there. After I finished my session this afternoon, I can personally attest to the truth of his statement.
The waves were incredibly steep today, effectively forcing you to take off side-ways. It’s tricky sometimes to literally “slide” down the face in pig-dog posture, so I was appreciating my goofy-foot-edness today.
There were some caverns out there if you were in the right place at the right time. I had a few near makes on similar to this in the afternoon.
I was in a perpetual state of perplexity as I watched the size increase throughout the day when the primary swell was forecasted to be about 3.2ft @13 seconds or something like this… LOL. I think the storm that hit Mexico threw all the surf forecasts off kilter.
*Crack* *Sip* “Ahhhhh.” After paddling your tail off through rip-currents and side-shore wind chunks, many folks head straight for the refrigerator to crack open a refreshing Victoria or Toña. If the surf is bad, then it’s not a bad way to spend your vacation! There weren’t many surfers braving the wooly conditions at mid-day, but hopefully the wind is favorable tomorrow for us! This morning when out to check out the waves and saw this boat bring some surfers and not sure if they went to check out other waves but here in Colorado nice..
Happy Hump day of the week people… and happy Humps and BIG lumps is what we got too! New swell came in, in the late afternoon and looks like we already have our first great swell of November. Let’s just hope the conditions stay consistent with the fresh juice and energy the ocean sending us..
