Nicaragua Surf Report for Sunday, February 19, 2023

Happy SUPER MEGA WINDY Sunday chicos! Man, those winds have sure kicked into high gear. They’re saying the winds are some of the strongest in over the past 10 years of these natural timely strong season for these kinds of winds. That being said, there were waves. Hard and very challenging to not only surf in (as I watched people paddle their butts off only to be denied access entry to a lot of the waves today) but even for me, even using a mono-pod, there were some winds gusts that blew my camera completely off of tracking a few surfers when I was shooting them going down the line. Yeah, the winds were that strong. Not to mention being pelted or more like sand blasted from head to toe by wind gusts upwards of 30-40mph. That actually didn’t feel so great!  Hahah, I actually have sand in my ears… (wth???) But I think I got enough content for you guys for today, so have at it!

Getting to your feet in these conditions is waaaaay more difficult than you can imagine!

This guy obviously came out with a lot more foam, thus making the paddle into wave a little more easy, but the down side with it sometimes comes that the more foam, the more that the wind can get up and under your board and blow you right off the back of the wave.

This guy made it about this far until the winds halted him to just about a complete dead stop while the wave kept going.

Every surfer LOVES or will take offshore winds over anything (except maybe sheet glass) although playing devils advocate, some light to moderate offshores actually help create the perfect barreling waves by holding up the wave faces.

But just by looking at those white capping howling winds out the back, you can tell that today and probably for the the next month or 2 this is how it’s just gonna have to be.

There is always kitesurfing, but those are better saved for those gnarly onshore days, unless you want to set sail for the Galapagos Islands or just straight up disappear out into the biggest body of ocean water, aka the Great Pacific Ocean.

One of the more mellow, less offshore waves of the day.

Want to know or learn a little more about why we have these incredible winds, specifically in this area of all of Latin America. This applies to our current seasonally strong winds called the “Papagayo Winds” but it also gives us our world renowned 300+ days of the year perfect offshore winds. Check out some pretty interesting facts the learn a little more about these fascinating winds and what causes them by clicking on the links below (and FYI, the photos my good amigo Tommy Tsunami shared just this morning on his FB page - Muchísimas Gracias buddy!)
