Hi everyone! Welcome to Saturday’s surf report from Panga Drops. The waves may have been a hair larger today, but the swell should start to fill in tomorrow.
John started out his surf session at the “Costa Mar peak”, but it was a little inconsistent there, so he ended up shifting over to the main peak.
Excellent power and technique (note his lead arm being used as a stake or pivot point) demonstrated during this frontside cutback. John meant business today.
John wasn’t the only surfer in the water who meant business today. Derek Thomas was out and slashing about with some force. Derek has his own unique surf style. John planted his lead arm to rotate around during his frontside carve, while Derek actually dropped his trailing arm toward the water surface. The difference in their arm placement will lead to differences in how their shoulder lines and surfboard lines will progress through the remaining portion of their carves. The effect of this move from Derek will be to restrict the flow of his nose back up toward the whitewater while forcing his rail and tail down through the water in a sharper “burst” movement.
Derek executed a more standard sequence of rotation here. But not without his unique flare. Check his fingers of his right hand haha.
DT made light work of this morning’s conditions. The clean and long rights favor his surf style.

John pushing hard through this backside top turn. I’d argue he was a bit out of the pocket given the extreme extent to which he had to extend his legs.
One more of DT’s power jams to close today’s action. This shot is from later in the process of the turn. You can see clearly how his counter-rotation restricts the flow of the surfboards nose, but enables him to apply extreme downward pressure on the tail and fins yielding a large semi-circle of spray and a favorable aesthetic look.
It was a chill day in the water today. Overcast and not many folks out. Likely the last day of calm before the engine starts and things kick into gear. Tony Zeta returns tomorrow to bring us what should be the opening day of action of a couple back to back swells.

Hello everyone welcome back to the Surf Report today was an amazing day to be out in the water even tho it was a little more on the cooler side there were still around 20 surfers out there having a great time.
Well, we’ve made it to hump day, midweek madness, Miércoles, or otherwise best known as Wednesday! Man what a gorgeous day it was out there this morning. Nice perfect offshores, fast, but some perfect tapering barreling waves. What else could you ask for on a midweek surf session?
Welcome to the Tuesday surf report amigos! Another beautiful day in paradise, however, the nice juicy swell had diminished a little bit and it was super windy (pretty normal) but as quoted from a friend who was out there surfing, he said… “it was pretty difficult out there”!
