Nicaragua Surf Report for Thursday, July 27, 2023

Josh S

Happy Thursday everyone! Welcome to today’s surf report from Playa Colorado. At long last we are seeing signs of swell! (Bad for my students though.)

Josh S

You can see that Colorados hasn’t fully woken from its slumber as this barrel ended up pinching on this gentleman as opposed to staying open. Oh well, better to have loved and lost, than sat on the beach drinking Toña!

Josh S

This guy did his best to hold on for dear life. The chandelier section engulfed him, but you can still see his body and board through the lip.

Josh S

Carlos de Colorados (Carlos Perez) was out bodysurfing today. Here he is sharing a party wave with a surfer. If only the surfer had pulled in to the oncoming tube section, then they both would’ve got barreled!

Josh S

Although the waves were still a bit marginal in my opinion, these guys who decided to surf this afternoon well be better prepared for the next few days than they would be otherwise by loitering on the beach (like me). Except I’ve been wearing my designated pusher shirt instead of loitering hahaha

Josh S

This guy didn’t belt this section as hard as I was expecting, but his style all throughout this ride were stellar! I like his narrow stance, lagging back hand (although not necessarily functional), and his Rusty logo on his board.

Josh S

This guy hiding up at the North peak managed to sneak a pretty nice nugget under everyone’s radar. Although the barrel was small, it was quite round and this guy’s pig-dog form was solid, so he ended up making it out.

Josh S

Here’s Carlos doing his best to stay barreled, his natural state haha! He’s just getting a light warm up for the coming week of prospective chest to head high barrels.

Josh S

This chica got a nice drop on this left-hand set wave. Hopefully she stepped on the gas pedal to ensure that this first section didn’t leave her in the dust!

Josh S

This big fella got the wave of the day today. As I was reviewing today’s photos my dad got very excited to see a big boy representing in the line-up (my dad is a fellow big-boy haha). Apparently the gentleman’s name is Eddy and he’s from Puerto Rico.

Josh S

Eddy did well to hit the breaks sufficiently to slide behind the current! He took a pretty much perfect line on this tricky wave, at least I would’ve likely tried to take a similar line on this one.

Josh S

Uh oh! The lip is starting to land on him and engulf him! I continued to shoot, but I thought Eddy was cooked as soon as this tube shrank shut on him.

Josh S

But Eddy pulled a rabbit out of a hat and managed to bust through the fairly thick lip! Very impressive Eddy! I’d say that’s a 10 pointer for today’s conditions.

Josh S

This poor fella got horizontal on accident here! Are you a bit tired mate? Oh well, it happens to the best of us every now and again. Better to get your wipeouts out of the way now when the tubes are still fairly marginal.

Josh S

But this actor must feel the burn of the subjective value of this barrel foregone as a result of an erroneous takeoff. This is a latter frame from the wave of above that our actor fell on. If I was him I would be writhing in pain as this was one of the better waves I saw while shooting.

Josh S

To close today’s action, we have a nice cruisey set wave. This chica leveraged her larger gear to stroke in early and with plenty of speed, which spit her across the wave face early. On larger gear, this “early entry with momentum” approach is essential to ensure one gets far enough across the wave face.

Josh S

A few grommets on the way in and on the way out. When in Rome right? Sunshine, 80 Farenheit water, and offshore winds aren’t a bad deal. Thanks for checking in to today’s report everyone! Tomorrow looks like it will be a bit bigger, so hopefully more tube time for your viewing pleasure. Yeww.
