Nicaragua Surf Report for Thursday, September 21, 2017

Javier Baldovinos

Hello everyone, this is Baldo with Thursday’s surf report from Santana beach. The waves were chest high on the sets, it was peaky and the water was nice. A couple of feet bigger and it would have been perfect. As you might already know, here in Nicaragua we are spoiled little brats crying for the next new toy in the store.

If the water is not glassy and the waves are not barreling at any time of the day, most of us complain about it… sometimes we even decide not to get in the water when it’s light onshore and pumping.

Javier Baldovinos

But what’s the best thing to do when the waves are decent enough to still go out? Bring a board different than your normal thruster and have fun with it. There are endless surfboard shapes out there, why keep using the same board all the time?

Javier Baldovinos

Like this guy, who brought his red twin fin fish to play around, it looked like he was still figuring it out but that’s the point, right? Learn the curves of the board and learn how to adapt your style to it.

Javier Baldovinos

This other guy was using something like an old school thruster, with a lot more volume in the nose than a normal one. It was fun to watch because he already got the board figure out. You could tell he was having a great time.

Javier Baldovinos

Here he is in another wave cutting some lines into it. I think he got on a longboard later.

Javier Baldovinos

This is not the case for Don Guru Stone, who, on a normal basis, uses an asymmetric shortboard no matter the conditions, he loves it. There he is, waxing his board while walking into those little peaks.

Javier Baldovinos

Looks like his asymmetric board works just fine under his feet, right?

Javier Baldovinos

Talking about weird boards, here is The Mermaid with her noseless fish surfboard. Where is El Matador?

Javier Baldovinos

Of course you could still have a lot of fun with the normal shortboard today. Here is Moncho on a nice right.

Javier Baldovinos

Size doesn’t matter… for some, today was almost double overhead. This local grom was catching so much speed on these “little” waves!

Javier Baldovinos

Buena Onda Gil joined the group of the “less common” boards surf day. That board has FUN written all over it, and looks cool too with the red rails.

Javier Baldovinos

There he goes, Buena Onda Gil bottom turning his mini longboard with style.

Javier Baldovinos

Kenny Smith was the only person getting waves at first peak. Waves were smaller and scarce over there but he had them all for himself.

Javier Baldovinos

If your nickname is “Guru” most be for something… here he is hiding behind the curtain of this tiny barrel.

Javier Baldovinos

And if you hang out with Don Guru, maybe you get lucky enough to get behind the curtain too. His buddy Bryan following his teachings very close.

Javier Baldovinos

Some people prefer to create their own curtains when they are hard to find.

Javier Baldovinos

And sometimes the curtain just find you without prior notice.

A single fin! After taking photos I went out with the single fin surfboard I shaped "for my girlfriend" (now my wife) a long time ago, it was fun but, sadly, I forgot to bring a leash with me so I got out after a couple of times of swimming back to the beach to get the board.

Javier Baldovinos

Eso es todo por hoy amigos. I hope you enjoyed today’s report as much as I enjoyed writing it. Saludos!
